Wine List

Special Wines, for that Special Night in a Special Place

The Speckled Hen Inn is pleased to offer some very special, enticingly priced wines for your enjoyment during your stay.

Your Innkeepers have been enthusiastically collecting and enjoying wines for over 30 years. They would like to share their wine passion and experience with you. These wines “exemplify the grape varietals” (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Grenache, Petite Syrah, Malbec, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, etc.) and have been tasted and selected by the Innkeepers for the Inn’s wine list. Most of the featured wines have received ratings of 90 or more points (which is exceptional!) and are outstanding values for the money.

Choose your wine from the list below and it will be delivered to your door at the proper serving temperature and with the appropriate stemware. We think that there is no more perfect way to spend an evening than relaxing with a bit of wine, some special tunes, and someone dear.

Our wines are sold ONLY by the full bottle.  It is also legal in Wisconsin for us to re-cork any wine remaining in your bottle so that you may take it home with you.  All wine purchases are subject to Wisconsin sales tax.

Reds

2007 Snoqualmie Winery, Whistle Stop Red, Columbia Valley, WA. A Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet and Merlot. Vibrant fresh fruit aromas of blackberries and juicy currant combine with hints of herb. The palate is full of the same black fruit flavor matched with soft supple tannin and rich sweet oak.  $15

2008 14 Hands, Cabernet Sauvignon, Washington State.  This wine features aromas of sweet cassis and black cherries with subtle hints of spice and dried herbs.  Dark stone fruit flavors are joined by notes of cocoa and complemented by fine velvety tannins.  It is great paired with a Glass Nickel Fetalicious pizza.  $15

2008 Red Diamond, Merlot, Washington State.  Aromas of tea, molasses, and casis introduce this Merlot.  The fleshy and subtle palate displays flavors of figs, vanilla and a touch of caramel that lead to the creamy thick finish.  Pairs nicely with Wisconsin Artisan cheeses. $15

2009 Terrazas Malbec, Argentina.  Deep crimson with sharp candy red highlights.  Upon swirling, jazzy notes of blackberries and sour cherries develop into fine traces of smoke and spices.  Bright and generous, a lively mouthful of ripened plums and boysenberry, with chewy tannins and a violet scent building up to a refreshing finish.  A great wine to finish out a great day. $15

Whites

2004 Sequra Vivdas, Brut Reserva (Sparkling), Spain. Pale straw yellow in color, elegant and harmonious on the nose, and fresh and well balanced on the palate, where the predominance of  Macabeo is evident. Ample flavors and a persistent, fine finish. $15

2008 Benvolio, Fruili grave, Pinot Grigio, Italy.  Vibrant on the palate, the crisp acidity acts as a counterpoint to the peach, almond, and light floral notes in the wine.  A great aperitif. $15

2009 Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay, California.  Beautiful integrated tropical flavors such as pineapple, mango and papaya with citrus notes that explode in your mouth.  These flavors delicately intertwine with aromas of vanilla and honey to create depth and balance throughout.  A hint of toasted oak rounds out the long, lingering finish.  K-J Chard is a constant favorite of chardonnay lovers everywhere. $15

NV Wollersheim Winery, Prairie Fume’ (Seyval Blanc), Lodi, Wisconsin. A crisp, fresh, semi-dry white wine bursting with citrus and tropical fruit highlights.  The perfect picnic wine. $15

2006 Sonoma-Cutrer (375 ml), Chardonnay, Russian River Ranch, Sonoma, CA, Pretty aromas of jasmine and rose petal give way to tropical fruits like pineapple and mango.  Roasted hazlenut joins nougat and almond butter, finishing with a touch of lime and lychee.  Medium-weight and clean with a wonderful acid backbone, the wine expands in the glass, offering up grapefruit, lemon, pear and kumquat with subtle vanilla bean and herbal mushroom.  The lingering finish hints of minerality, along with apple, lime and a surprising kiss of strawberry.  A market basket of aromas and flavors.  Half-bottle (375 ml) – $15

Gloria Ferrer Brut (sparkling), Sonoma, CA  This wine has pear and floral notes backed by toasty almond.  On the palate, one finds lively citrus, toast and apple flavors overlaid with persistent effervescence, a creamy mid-palate and toasty finish.  It is the only California sparkling wine on the Wine Spectator Top 100 list. $25
