Breakfast is Back – Reinvented

Healthy Breakfast

Breakfast Reinvented – As of May 5, 2022, we are providing a breakfast, but it’s different than it used to be.  We learned a lot along the way and have responded to our guest requests by revising the concept of breakfast into a menu of choices the guest chooses when they arrive.  Happily, we will continue to offer the wonderful organic produce grown on the property, but the new menu will accommodate special diets in the choices themselves along with flexibility in when guests want to enjoy it. In addition, guests still enjoy the same great getaway experience with a beautiful inn and amenities, a menagerie of animals to enjoy, and plenty of property to explore.  And in times like

2022 News From The Speckled Hen Inn

TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice Award 2021

Welcome to 2022!  It’s been a rough road the past two years, but we wanted to share our updates after re-emerging from the pandemic.  Restrictions just lifted in Dane County in March, so we are now able to provide breakfast again and look to begin on May 1st.   Since we were not able to provide breakfast during the pandemic unless we could accommodate social distancing, we instead reduced our rates and referred everyone to our favorite local breakfast venue, The Jet Room.  Nick, the owner, always provides great food and hospitality to all our guests, for which we are very grateful. While we’ve reduced the number of guest rooms available to those on the ground floor of the Inn, it

Our Snowy Owl is Back!

Snowy Owl

Guess who’s back???? Our beautiful snowy owl is back again this winter and has made its home in the tall pine trees of the back woods.  Although there used to be two of them, only one has returned for the past couple of years.  And since they mate for life, it is sad to think of what may have happened to the other one, but we sure are glad to see this one considers us as their home for the winter. If you’ve never seen a snowy owl, they really are spectacular.  With a wingspan of 6′, our snowy owl likes to roost in the back woods and utilize the big pasture that we refer to as “the football field”

FRESH EGGS FOR SALE!

For a limited time The Speckled Hen Inn  is offering fresh eggs for sale! YES!  The Speckled Hen Inn Bed and Breakfast really does have SPECKLED HENS – 50 of them in fact! Guests are encouraged to meander the property when they’re staying with us.  We also encourage guests to feed the hens with the fresh produce we provide for them from the gardens.  Our very happy hens provide us with wonderful eggs that we use at breakfast every day!  Compare their full, rich yellow yolks with those from the grocery store to see (and TASTE) for yourself! Is there really such a thing as happy chickens? We think so!  Our sweet speckled hens have every reason to be happy.  They

BOOKING DIRECT & WHY IT’S IMPORTANT

Book Direct Screen

What’s the big deal of booking direct and why is it important?   Well, there’s a war going on between the OTA (online travel agency) industry and B&B owners nationwide.  Unfortunately we are losing!    We are pleading for you, loyal B&B fans, to BOOK DIRECT.    When you are online, choose your booking engine carefully.   Here’s why:    Expedia, the well-known billion-dollar travel booking site, is working hard to take complete control of lodging reservations online, including small B&B’s like ours.  Expedia, Hotels.com, Travelocity and other travel networks are misrepresenting themselves as the direct website of the hotel or lodging choice.  Unfortunately, most people booking online don’t even know it’s happening. What this means to you and why you

We Support Local!

Gentle Breeze Honey Logo

The Speckled Hen Inn is a working farm, producing over 35 fruits and vegetables for it’s farm to table multi-course breakfast experience. We believe in supporting local and have formed partnerships with various local family owned businesses because relationships matter.  We’re just a mom and pop small business ourselves, but we know that every dollar spent locally helps our partners thrive.  Gentle Breeze Honey is one of those special local partners and we not only use a lot of their honey in our unique farm to table breakfast creations, but we sell it as well!  You can find Gentle Breeze Honey in most local grocery stores, at the Dane County Farmer’s Market, and at The Speckled Hen Inn!

The Lambs are HERE!

Buster and Bucky the bottle fed lambs

THE LAMBS HAVE BEEN BORN!  If you are with us in May and June you can even bottle feed Bucky! For all our repeat guests, Buster is well known.  He’s the lamb that was bottle fed (by many of our guests!) and now he thinks he’s a dog – in fact, I guess he is our Sheep Dog. Licorice had twins but rejected the second one who was smaller than our cat at birth!  But no worries – Bucky is being bottle fed and enjoying all the attention and here he is with Buster who is going to be a very good big brother!   Cocoa and Lucy both had twins and Agnes had triplets so we have a total of 9 lambs
