Wine in a Can?

Francis F Coppola Chardonnay in a Can

When you mention wine in a can to people it can create some interesting facial expressions and when our wine broker introduced the various choices, I have to admit I was hesitant.  But after trying it, I was really surprised and thought maybe it would be something new and fun to try at The Speckled Hen Inn!   While we had some choices, we finally settled on Francis F. Coppola California Vineyards Chardonnay – mostly because of the quality and taste – especially for the price.   Some of our guests would like to have wine but can’t drink a whole bottle so a smaller quantity of wine in a can that provides 2 glasses was a nice compromise.  And if it

We Support Local!

The Speckled Hen Inn is a working farm, producing over 35 fruits and vegetables for it’s farm to table multi-course breakfast experience. We believe in supporting local and have formed partnerships with various local family owned businesses because relationships matter.  We’re just a mom and pop small business ourselves, but we know that every dollar spent locally helps our partners thrive.  Gentle Breeze Honey is one of those special local partners and we not only use a lot of their honey in our unique farm to table breakfast creations, but we sell it as well!  You can find Gentle Breeze Honey in most local grocery stores, at the Dane County Farmer’s Market, and at The Speckled Hen Inn!

The Lambs are HERE!

Buster and Bucky

THE LAMBS HAVE BEEN BORN!  If you are with us in May and June you can even bottle feed Bucky! For all our repeat guests, Buster is well known.  He’s the lamb that was bottle fed (by many of our guests!) and now he thinks he’s a dog – in fact, I guess he is our Sheep Dog. Licorice had twins but rejected the second one who was smaller than our cat at birth!  But no worries – Bucky is being bottle fed and enjoying all the attention and here he is with Buster who is going to be a very good big brother!   Cocoa and Lucy both had twins and Agnes had triplets so we have a total of 9 lambs

New Glarus Day Trip

If  you love beer, you’ve no doubt heard of Spotted Cow, the legendary beer that is so good you can’t buy it across the State line because it’s illegal.  Yep, it’s true – Wisconsin State pride runs deep here.  So if you’re visiting Madison, it’s so worth a day trip to visit the New Glarus Brewery, where the legend began.   You can take a free self-guided tour Mon-Sat 10am-5pm and Sun 12pm-5pm.  Tasting room samples are available and we love the 3 samples for only $8.00 which include a commemorative tasting glass.  This Wisconsin brewery has an amazing story, a first class facility, and a rich variety of the finest beer around.  A great stop along the way is the little town of Paoli which hosts a variety

Wollersheim Winery Day Trip

As innkeepers, we are usually so busy running the inn and maintaining the property we don’t have a chance to go and just explore ourselves.  However, when we get a good tip from our guests, we love to take advantage of the opportunity- especially when it’s a known winner.  And sometimes it’s so good we even write about it – like now!   When it’s a beautiful day and you just want to take a leisurely drive and enjoy a little bit of Wisconsin, jump on Highway 51 North to Highway 19 West through Waunakee.  As you are passing through Waunakee, you’ll want to stop at The Red Barn Company Store on Main Street.  It has a wonderfully eclectic collection of household
