New Glarus Day Trip

If  you love beer, you’ve no doubt heard of Spotted Cow, the legendary beer that is so good you can’t buy it across the State line because it’s illegal.  Yep, it’s true – Wisconsin State pride runs deep here.  So if you’re visiting Madison, it’s so worth a day trip to visit the New Glarus Brewery, where the legend began.   You can take a free self-guided tour Mon-Sat 10am-5pm and Sun 12pm-5pm.  Tasting room samples are available and we love the 3 samples for only $8.00 which include a commemorative tasting glass.  This Wisconsin brewery has an amazing story, a first class facility, and a rich variety of the finest beer around.  A great stop along the way is the little town of Paoli which hosts a variety

Wollersheim Winery Day Trip

As innkeepers, we are usually so busy running the inn and maintaining the property we don’t have a chance to go and just explore ourselves.  However, when we get a good tip from our guests, we love to take advantage of the opportunity- especially when it’s a known winner.  And sometimes it’s so good we even write about it – like now!   When it’s a beautiful day and you just want to take a leisurely drive and enjoy a little bit of Wisconsin, jump on Highway 51 North to Highway 19 West through Waunakee.  As you are passing through Waunakee, you’ll want to stop at The Red Barn Company Store on Main Street.  It has a wonderfully eclectic collection of household

4 Hours of Summer Fun in Madison

So you’re in Madison for the weekend and you want to do something fun and make the most of your time while you’re here.   If you love the outdoors, Madison BCycles, or Red Bikes,  are a great way to get around and they’re only $3/30 minutes.  Plus, you can check them in and check them out at any red-bike station around town.  A nice trek is renting them on the corner of Williamson and Blair and riding the bike trail southwest along Lake Monona.   There’s usually activity out on the lake, and there are baby geese and ducks in June who always enjoy breadcrumbs if you happen to bring some with you. After our ride, take a walk to Capitol Square and stop in

A Cool Summer Breakfast Dessert – Very Berry Sorbet

When berries come into season in July, we have so many different kinds in abundance that we really enjoy using them in a variety of ways.  One of the traditions here at The Speckled Hen Inn is our sorbet served as the 3rd (or in many cases during harvest seasons the 4th) course.    We discovered a mulberry tree near the back gardens this year so we have added it to our list of sorbets we make and serve but you can add any berry you like – blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, blackberry – just strain the seeds. Here’s the recipe:  Mulberry Sorbet We recommend using a sorbet/ice cream maker. Ingredients: 4-1/2 cups mulberries (or any berry) 6T lemon juice (may add more

Cherries are in season

Cherry Almond Clafoutis We have a lot to be grateful for here at The Speckled Hen Inn.  We have 20 acres of heaven that is only 10 minutes from downtown yet a world away from it all – in fact most people drive right past us because we’re so hidden and if it weren’t for their GPS they may not even find us!  But when you come in, you will see the most beautiful, serene landscape of a brilliantly green pasture surrounded with trees, a white fence,  and the happiest sheep and llama you will ever find.  There are gardens, orchards, berry patches, and a vineyard that produces amazing fruits and vegetables.  I still pinch myself and thank God every day that we

Another Concert on the Square season begins next week

It is that wonderful time of year in Madison.  Summer!  Time to celebrate with family and friends in ways that become a tradition.  A very special summertime tradition in Madison is the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra’s Concert on the Square series.  For 5 Wednesday evenings, starting June 24, the orchestra performs on the steps of the Wisconsin State Capitol building in front of a huge crowd of fun and music loving fans.  Concert goers arrive early, around 5:00PM or a bit later to spread their colorful blankets on the green capitol lawn.   The concert won’t begin until 7:00 so there is time to do a little shopping or just walking around the downtown area.  Some bring games or a good book

When my guests at The Speckled Hen Inn ask me what there is to do on Saturday morning in Madison, my automatic response is, “Go to the Farmers Market!”  The Dane County Farmers’ Market is the largest producer-only farmers’ market in the country.  All the items are produced locally by the vendor behind the table.  The market is back on the Capitol Square for the summer months and thousands of locals as well as and tourists and market lovers from far and near flock to the brightly colored vendor stands to fill their shopping baskets with the freshest fruits and veggies imaginable.  You will also find meats, baked goods, specialty food items like honey and pesto, and, of course, lots of Wisconsin
