What to do in Madison in Winter

winter at the inn

There’s always something to do in Madison in the winter and everyone loves a nature escape!   With all the animals on our property, nature escapes are a Speckled Hen Inn specialty, especially in the winter!  Lilly and her flock of sheep love the cold and are almost always out in the pasture no matter what the temperature.  The chickens, on the other hand, not so much!   Instead, our pampered speckled hens prefer to remain in their heated coop! Guests are the same way – some love it outdoors and want to explore.  But others love to watch nature from the cozy indoors  with a nice cup of warm cranberry rum punch!    So whether you can only take the cold

Planning the Garden

It is easy to find information on planting a garden but we think that planning the garden is just as important.  Only a plan well executed and blessed by the good Lord can assure the best results. Days like today are perfect for working outdoors: when the sun is shining yet there is a good breeze to keep you cool. The April rains have been preparing the soil to be easily cultivated yet full of moisture to help the plants quickly adapt to their new environment. We’ve also been working hard cleaning up the property and preparing our flower and vegetable gardens for planting.   After breakfast, many of the guests like to take a stroll around the bountiful gardens while taking notes

Find what is real and important in life.

Every now and then I need to be grounded, to find what is real and important in life. In a time of controversy and divergence, it is easy to view the world as a conflicted web of despair especially if you concentrate on the negatives that life can sometimes bring. When there are struggles, sometimes it’s important to just get away. Stop, rest, refresh. When we are rested it is easier to refocus our energy on gratitude instead of our problems because there is so much to be grateful for. When we bought the inn a year ago, it was a place that offered us that rest. Not in the physical sense, because running an inn on a property this

What’s Happening in Madison WI at The Speckled Hen Inn

Check out what’s happening  in Madison WI at The Speckled Hen Inn right now. Our little flock of Katahdin Hair Sheep attract a lot of attention especially at this time of year when the new little lambs are so much fun to watch.  We have 8 little lambs this year and there is a video of them with their moms on our Facebook page. The first question that most folks ask is ,” What are those animals in the pasture? Are they goats?”  No, they are sheep but they are a different kind of sheep than you usually see.  Katahdin Hair Sheep are a breed that was developed in the 1950’s by a fellow from Maine whose goal was to

February + Chocolate = Love

February is finally here and we are looking forward to putting something chocolate on the breakfast table at The Speckled Hen Inn every single day this month.  Our very first offering this month will be our Mexican Hot Chocolate Cream for desert after breakfast.  This little bit of comfort food provides just the right touch of chocolatey goodness to put a sweet finish on our bountiful breakfast.  A slightly larger portion would make a decadent desert after dinner or a late night chocolate splurge.  We serve it warm so the consistency is somewhere between thick sipping cream and a spoonable chocolate mousse.  Garnish the little cup of cream with a bit of lightly sweetened whipped cream and a sprinkle of

The Gazebo – A place to enjoy a little music, a little wine, a pretty view.

Earlier this summer I visited Olbrich Botanical Gardens, our award-winning city garden in Madison, Wisconsin.  I discovered that they had created several small sitting areas throughout the garden where visitors could stop and rest and enjoy the views of the garden or perhaps become a part of the garden.  I decided that guests might enjoy doing the same thing at The Speckled Hen Inn. I often feel that some guests, with their desire for privacy, fail to take advantage of all the extra little places around our property where they can share a quiet conversation, relax and enjoy the natural surroundings, and disconnect from whatever it is that they need to get away from.  Our rooms in the Inn are great
