New Glarus Day Trip

New Glarus Spotted Cow Logo

If  you love beer, you’ve no doubt heard of Spotted Cow, the legendary beer that is so good you can’t buy it across the State line because it’s illegal.  Yep, it’s true – Wisconsin State pride runs deep here.  So if you’re visiting Madison, it’s so worth a day trip to visit the New Glarus Brewery, where the legend began.   You can take a free self-guided tour Mon-Sat 10am-5pm and Sun 12pm-5pm.  Tasting room samples are available and we love the 3 samples for only $8.00 which include a commemorative tasting glass.  This Wisconsin brewery has an amazing story, a first class facility, and a rich variety of the finest beer around.  A great stop along the way is the little town of Paoli which hosts a variety

Wollersheim Winery Day Trip

Wollersheim Winery Sign

As innkeepers, we are usually so busy running the inn and maintaining the property we don’t have a chance to go and just explore ourselves.  However, when we get a good tip from our guests, we love to take advantage of the opportunity- especially when it’s a known winner.  And sometimes it’s so good we even write about it – like now!   When it’s a beautiful day and you just want to take a leisurely drive and enjoy a little bit of Wisconsin, jump on Highway 51 North to Highway 19 West through Waunakee.  As you are passing through Waunakee, you’ll want to stop at The Red Barn Company Store on Main Street.  It has a wonderfully eclectic collection of household

Where to Go Snowshoeing in Madison WI

Snowshoe path

Have you ever wanted to try out the sport of snowshoeing and wondered where to go snowshoeing in Madison WI?  We have some suggestions for you and now that we now have enough snow to make this possible, give it a try! Winter is here, and doesn’t it look beautiful? There are many that appreciate the warmer temperatures.  However, I always look forward to being able to enjoy the snow and ice throughout the winter. When I think of the cold, snow and wind…  Well, really just the snow, it makes me think of sledding, skiing, ice-skating and snowshoeing.   I love being able to get outside and having the sun shine on my face and feeling active, almost in defiance

What to do in Madison in Winter

winter at the inn

There’s always something to do in Madison in the winter and everyone loves a nature escape!   With all the animals on our property, nature escapes are a Speckled Hen Inn specialty, especially in the winter!  Lilly and her flock of sheep love the cold and are almost always out in the pasture no matter what the temperature.  The chickens, on the other hand, not so much!   Instead, our pampered speckled hens prefer to remain in their heated coop! Guests are the same way – some love it outdoors and want to explore.  But others love to watch nature from the cozy indoors  with a nice cup of warm cranberry rum punch!    So whether you can only take the cold

The Lambs are HERE!

Buster and Bucky the bottle fed lambs

THE LAMBS HAVE BEEN BORN!  If you are with us in May and June you can even bottle feed Bucky! For all our repeat guests, Buster is well known.  He’s the lamb that was bottle fed (by many of our guests!) and now he thinks he’s a dog – in fact, I guess he is our Sheep Dog. Licorice had twins but rejected the second one who was smaller than our cat at birth!  But no worries – Bucky is being bottle fed and enjoying all the attention and here he is with Buster who is going to be a very good big brother!   Cocoa and Lucy both had twins and Agnes had triplets so we have a total of 9 lambs
