Romantic getaways in the Badger State might put you at the edge of Lake Superior, under tall pines in the Northwoods, in the rolling hills of the Driftless region or the heart of Milwaukee. As a contributing editor to Midwest Living, I’ve visited Wisconsin many times for weekend getaways—and I asked other Midwest Living editors to help round out a list of favorites. Whether your style is a boutique hotel with rooftop dining or a cabin in the woods with a hot tub, Wisconsin delivers. Here are 20 of the best places to stay for romance.

Below is the article on The Speckled Hen Inn as one of the Best Romantic Getaways

Speckled Hen Inn Madison Wisconsin
The Speckled Hen Inn in Madison provides a rural feeling just a few miles from the city’s major attractions.

The Speckled Hen Inn, Madison

The Speckled Hen, built in 1989, anchors a quiet 20-acre property that’s five to eight miles from all major attractions downtown, like Olbrich Botanical Gardens, the Chazen Museum of Art and the State Capitol. Amenities vary among the four guest rooms; some feature gas fireplaces, jetted tubs, window seats (watch the sheep and llamas outside!), a private deck, or a large spa bath. The complimentary breakfast might showcase dishes made with eggs from the inn’s hens. Packages include An Enchanted Evening, with sparkling wine and chocolate-covered strawberries, and Wisconsin Cheese Sampler. Walking trails help you explore the property and its creeks, orchards, gardens and pastures.

Pro Tip: Drive into Madison on Wednesdays or Saturdays to shop at the Dane County Farmers Market, the nation’s largest producer-only market—then bring your flowers, produce, cheese and bread back to the inn for a picnic.
